Students seek warmth, comfort in fall fashion trends

There are many changes between summer and fall, but that doesn’t stop us from perceiving our inner fashionistas. From head to toe our whole outfit is almost reversed. We go from practically no clothes- to having almost no skin showing.

“I cover up a whole lot more in fall. Summer’s pretty revealing. I don’t teach in the summer so I’m just living in jogging shorts, tank tops, workout stuff. Then in fall I’m back at work so I have to dress up more,” Fashion design teacher Jamie Cantrell said.
Students can relate, it’s easy to become lax in the summer, but when the leaves drop, it’s time to up your game.

“Start wearing more pants, more layered clothes. In summer you just throw on a t-shirt or tank,” junior Jonathan Reese said.
Footwear is nearly non-existent with our tanned toes, but as the cold front approaches we look for warmth.

“I start wearing long sleeves and jeans, long sleeved dresses with boots instead of sandals,” junior Ellie Homan said.
Nothing says fall like sweaters and sleeves.

“My favorite piece is a very long flannel shirt that comes down to about mid-calf,” Cantrell said.

Not only does the clothing change, but the makeup industry changes as well.

“My makeup doesn’t [change] other than I wear makeup because I’m back at school. I just go all natural and I tan so I don’t really worry about my makeup too much, maybe just a little mascara. I bought Anastasia and Too Faced (makeup brands) with my daughter so that was a bad deal. I just bought the new Naked palette from Urban Decay. It has more of a glitter to it, more of a shine. Then, I bought a glow kit. I’ve been doing a lot of motivational speaking and book signings, so I have people taking pictures and i’m like ‘I’ve got to do something makeup wise.’ London helped me and we just spent a whole day doing makeovers. It was really fun,” Cantrell said.

While others go all out for school, others seek a couple more z’s.
“I don’t wear makeup to school, but I really like makeup. I’m actually really good at makeup, but I would rather sleep in the morning before school. During summer I don’t really wear eyeshadow, but during fall I like using blush as eyeshadow. I think that’s so pretty, and just blush. You should try it, maybe add a little bit of purple on the edge, just that color combination has been really poppin, on youtube and stuff, and champagne and such,” Bramer said.
Some keep it simple, some prefer variety.

“I like to change it up with the different outfits,” Homan said.
Students often use fashion to express individuality.

“They’re (talking about earrings) all from Salvation Army, and just some places I’ve found them. They’re always different, always on each four piercings,” Bramer said.

The recycled finds can be equally as valuable and fashionable as the name brand apparel.

“I have a lot of Brandy Melville pieces that I do wear during fall actually, that I love. I don’t really shop there anymore because they changed. I just bought a whole bunch of stuff like a year ago, I absolutely love. I look at their website now and I don’t like it. I have this really tight shirt that I could wear any day of the year and a couple basic shirts. I like super high-waisted stuff, like past my belly button, I love that. I feel so comfortable. I don’t know I just like being all covered. I really look towards comfort, but also when I’m not in school and I have actual time then I wear a lot of long and baggy pieces, I think are in style and have that asymmetrical cut. That huge, like just a lot of sleeve,” Bramer said.

As the weather gets colder, we tend to bring out our favorite fall jackets.

“I think you’re still gonna see a lot of of the army green kind of lightweight jackets. You’ll still see letter jackets if they [students] have that. I think you’ll see peacoats, those will always be in. You’ll see black or brown leather, kind of bomber jackets,” Cantrell said.

People like to cozy up with the fashionable outer attire during fall.

“A lot of trench coats. There’s a lot of fake pockets, like so many pockets going on, I’ve seen a lot of trends. I don’t really like that, I like real pockets. And that’s another thing- super long, literally down to your ankle coats. That’s really in right now. Especially with Yeezy, [Kanye West] started that mainly. In his fashion shows I see that just like tight, spandexy, long coats, and like high boots. Knee high or thigh high boots,” Bramer said.
Simplicity is key when it comes to fall colors.

“You’re still gonna see the olive green. The off whites, a lot of natural earthy colors. Style.com, which is a website I follow, that has all the designer’s fall collection on them. Everything’s neutral; black, off white, lot of gray, heathery gray. You’ll see some reds, but it’ll be mostly in flannel stuff,” said Cantrell.
Although some people prefer a little pop to accent a neutral outfit.

“I like staying in the neutral tone, but I think during the fall I go towards more oranges and reds because that’s just what autumn is and I really like that,” Bramer said.
But be careful not to wear specific colors.

“Avoid white. You’re not supposed to wear it after Labor Day, but white’s my favorite color so I’m always wearing it,” Reese said.
Famous have a high effect on numerous young adults. Especially when it comes to the fashion industry.

“Even coming back to Yeezy, I think [Kanye] is one of the most influential artists. When I say artists, yes in music but also in fashion. He just came out with that neutral tone. Everyone’s been obsessed with it. I love all the nudes, and grays, and taupe color. I have this shirt, this taupey, grayish, not even purple. I can’t even explain this color. Like it’s not purple, it’s not gray, it’s not taupe, it’s like you mix it up,” Bramer said.
