Every calendar year, a new position on the school board opens up: the student representative. Last month, the school voted junior Iqra Choudhry into office for 2013.
“It’s my job to inform the school board of what’s going on at the school and keep them informed,” Choudhry said.
Choudhry’s job also includes presenting the views of students to the school board at board meetings.
“I’m supposed to attend all the board meetings, and at the end of every board meeting I’m allowed to give my input on whatever I feel the students at the high school would want, or what’s going on,” Choudhry said. “If there’s anything different or anything that certain students want I present that to the board. I generally just present the overall thoughts of what’s going on.”
The task of representing all the students in the school can be quite daunting, however. With so students with equally as many viewpoints, it can be hard to incorporate everybody’s interests into a decision.
“I don’t know if I’ll make an impact, but I’ll try my best to sufficiently voice exactly what the students opinions are and try my best to include everyone’s voice,” Choudhry said.
As a student representative, Choudhry doesn’t have all the authority of an elected board member, but she can still be engaged in discussions and support decisions that reflect the views of the students.
“For the actual topics that come up, I don’t really have an influence on that but my opinion does. If for any reason I feel like the students wouldn’t be comfortable with anything, I can voice that opinion and then lead more discussion towards that,” Choudhry said.
