Two weeks ago, RHS sent three golfers to the sectional golf competition. Four RHS Golfers, senior David Drewniak, junior Mike Miller, sophomore Michael Steelman, and freshman Mark Martin, qualified to compete as a team at the sectional competition; but Drewniak was unable to attend due to illness, so the three remaining golfers competed as individuals.
Miller, who received all-district honors at the district competition, shot an 87, six strokes short of sending him to the state competition.
“I did average; I had some mistakes that hindered my chances of moving on,” Miller said.
Steelman shot a 90 at the competition.
“I started off birdie-birdie, and then it kind of went down-hill from there,” Steelman said, “you can’t get too greedy on the golf course; starting off birdie-birdie probably wasn’t good for me mentally.”
Martin, shooting an 82, was just one stroke short of making it to state. With three of its four sectionals qualifiers returning to the team next year, more appearances in the state tournament can be expected.
“I feel like I have more tournament experience now, and by the end of the year I feel that my swing got pretty good,” Steelman said, “It’s disappointing since I made it to state as a freshman, but I made all-conference and all district–it was a good year.”
