Movie Review of “Eternals”
God-like beings based on mythology pervade “Eternals,” Marvel’s latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in which a group of powerful ancient beings are sent to Earth to protect the human race from their counterparts called deviants. The movie features a large cast of characters from a Greek-inspired engineer to an illusion casting child, played by several well established actors and actresses such as popular “Game of Thrones” actors Kit Harington (Dane Whitman) and Richard Madden (Ikaris) along with the acclaimed Angelina Jolie (Thena).
“Eternals” follows the events of “Avengers Endgame” where a group of ancient beings called the Eternals have been in hiding for thousands of years when unexpected events cause them to come out of hiding and reunite to protect humanity.
Despite common opinion, I actually really enjoyed “Eternals”. I thought the film had a lot of the elements I look for in a Marvel movie: good character development, an interesting story, cool heroes, and of course, action. “Eternals” is a long movie, and by “long” I mean a whopping two hours and 37 minutes. Regardless of its long run-time, I never got bored, in fact, I was already hooked on the story and really enjoying the characters within the first half hour of the movie. I really enjoyed how the characters were based on myths from our world, and appreciated the character development in the movie. The characters questioned the point of their existence and questioned their role here on Earth and if what they were doing was morally correct. There was only one real criticism I had; The movie portrayed the Eternals as really powerful, but they didn’t seem that powerful, or they never showed the true extent of their power – perhaps a clue they might be saving their true power for a later movie.
In spite of broad criticism I think “Eternals” is a great movie – not one of Marvel’s bests, but it was still good. I would give it a seven out of ten, and I highly recommend it. If you like Marvel movies and mythology, this movie will serve you a combination of excitement and interest that is worth the price of admission.
