Ebenezer Scrooge stops by to share his opinions on Valentine’s Day
Coming up on February 14th, one of the most disruptive recognized days comes, Valentine’s Day. Not only is it a religious holiday in a secular society, it brings unneeded distraction to the school setting. Valentine’s Day is a day which is often recognized by the students who are in fact in need of more studying. This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday which minimizes the damage, but shouldn’t many people study rather than going out with their significant other? Valentine’s Day wasn’t even associated with any sort of “romantic love” until the High Middle Ages. There should be no way that a holiday with so little actual significance be recognized on a level such as the school. Valentine’s Day only serves as a way for girls to squeeze and extra dollar from their boyfriend and get a good day out of it. The students are distracted from their studies and grades begin to slide down that slippery slope.
Some quick examples of disruptive behavior caused by Valentine’s Day would be those ridiculous letters by the counselor’s offices which were hard to put up and really put different thoughts in the minds of students all of which distract from doing well in school. I advocate for the removal of a religious holiday that has some notion of “romantic” love attached to it due to the distraction it causes in school by destroying the calm learning environment of the school setting.
