President Obama has spoken again regarding the volatile circumstances in Syria. The
situation thus far stands at this: the civil war in Syria began roughly two years ago with the
people peacefully protesting Bashar al-Assad’s rule. The government began using force to quell
the protests, and ever since, the country of Syria has been in a heated civil war, in which
hundreds of thousands have died. After Syria chose to use poison gas on it’s citizens, Obama
chose to take to Congress the idea of using precision strikes to discourage their use. At this
point in time, Syria has applied to join the Geneva Protocol. This is not an act of good faith, nor is
it something the United States should just sit back and take their word for. Right now, Syria could
be scattering the chemical weapons all across the country. There is no guarantee that they won’t
use them, as they haven’t even disclosed where the weapons are being stored, which is a
requirement to join the Geneva Protocol, along with destroying the weapons.
Not only does America need to step in, every country that is a part of the United Nations needs
to be a part of this. The world needs to know that atrocities such as using one of the most
horrific weapons in history is not even an option, there is no getting away with it.
What happens if the United Nations takes no action? Then the U.N. is useless, and the treaties
that ban the most devastating weapons man has ever seen are basically useless. If no one
enforces these global laws, then what’s to stop other countries from breaking these treaties as
well, and cascading the world into the most terrifying wars imaginable?
