Many people do not realize that teens suffer from mental illness. However, in the United States, approximately 11 percent of teenagers suffer from a serious mental disorder that impacts their daily lives. It is estimated that 88,159 young people in Missouri have a diagnosed mental disorder. This would mean that approximately 99 Rolla High School students have experienced some type of mental illness.
One of the most common mental illnesses experienced by teens is depression. This type of depression is not just feeling a little down or stressed out. It is feeling so sad or hopeless that the individual cannot take part in their normal activities. The feelings are present every day and last more than two weeks. Individuals who experience this type of sadness need to ask a trusted adult for help. If left untreated, the individual is at risk of committing suicide.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and the second leading cause of death among college students. Most teens who attempt suicide give warning signs such as giving away their belongings or writing poems and essays about death. They may also have a dramatic change in their appearance or personality. These signs should be taken seriously. If you think one of your friends might be contemplating suicide, call 1-800-273-TALK for help.
Anxiety disorders are also common among teens, especially panic disorders or social phobias. Other mental health issues include bipolar disorders and substance abuse disorders. Mental health disorders can be treated effectively. Treatments include psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and medication. Early identification and treatment will result in better outcomes for the individual.
Most people are uncomfortable talking about mental illness. We need to continue working to decrease the stigma associated with it. Talk to a parent, teacher, counselor or friend if you need help.
