New RHS drama teacher hopes to expand theater department
Kelli McNeven, Rolla High School’s new drama and public speaking teacher, is excited to get more students interested and involved in the school’s drama program.
“[I am] mainly just trying to build it. I want to increase the number of students involved in both the plays and the classes. [I want to] make it fun, make it interesting… Make it a class that people want to take,” McNeven said.
To some, drama is an easy A, but McNeven wants to change that assumption.
“Sometimes, people have this misperception that drama is an easy class, but thats one misconception that I want to get people to not think. I don’t want people to come in and think it is an easy A. We do work and performances. There is thought and analysis. Things like that go into performance, but hopefully [we can] do it in a fun way, so it does not seem like work,” McNeven said.
McNeven has some ideas for the 2014 fall play.
“I think for the fall play, as long as the rights are available for the play, we are going to do Alice in Wonderland. It is a fun show. I have done it before,” McNeven Said.
According to McNeven, Alice in Wonderland is a production that is easy to adapt.
“It blends itself nicely to any size cast. If there are only a few people who audition, we can make it work. If lots of people audition, we can make it work. The roles are not really gender specific, aside from like Alice and the Queen of Hearts and the King of Hearts. The roles are sort of like fantasy characters so it does not matter if a boy or girl plays it,” McNeven said.
Auditions for the Rolla High School Fall play will start September 15th after school. Sign up times will be available from Mrs. McNeven.
