New national food standards affect RHS
This school year, all of America is implementing new standards for food distributed by schools. These standards include; smaller portions, fewer calories, and less sodium. This will affect everything from vending machines to the lunch room. Students everywhere are either going healthy or going hungry.
“I don’t think that this is teaching students moderation. I just think its making them more hungry,” librarian Jessie Kirkbride said.
Many of the snacks that, in the past, were for sale in the library can no longer be sold due to things such as high sugar or calorie levels. The new regulations will certainly make it hard for some students to adjust, especially juniors and seniors were used to the snacks and vending machines. It will also have an impact on the new books in the library.
“Roughly half of the money we use to buy books comes from the snack sales. That money also goes toward guest speakers and The Poetry Jam,” Kirkbride said.
While some may think that this is nothing but bad, others have a more positive outlook on things.
“I know that there are going to be some complaints about it, but I think that once everyone settles down and settles into the new regulations and the new tastes, it will be just fine,” cafeteria supervisor Beth Jett said.
