Junior Sarah Rolufs competed in the regional Poetry Out Loud competition at the Mineral Area College in Park Hills on Feb 29. Rolufs competed against four other students from the Missouri area. She recited three poems of varying style and varying length.
“I had a super cool time. It was really exciting to compete along with other students who enjoy poetry as much as I do,” Rolufs said.
Despite a valiant effort, Rolufs placed second. But not all was lost; Rolufs came out with more than just the experience.
“I got a twenty-five dollar gift card to Barnes and Noble! It was super awesome, because I love reading almost as much as I love poetry,” Rolufs said.
Rolufs hopes to continue developing her understanding of poetry and go back for the win next year.
“I think my poems were more complex and obscure than the winner’s poems. I deserved the recognition—plus I didn’t fake cry. That would have been dumb,” Rolufs said.
