Art Club

The artwork students see hanging throughout the school all have one thing in common: All of these works were created by students involved with art club.

“[Art Club] is more of a student lead club. We teach our students leadership skills and we have kind of like a mentoring protege program so that the upperclassmen are creating examples for the underclassmen to eventually step into those roles,” art club advisor Shannon Engelbrecht said.

Art club is an up and coming club here at Rolla high, and it is all because of the help of the leaders in Art Club that keep everything rolling smoothly.

“We have studio time right now, but, we do have some suggestion boxes set up in both art rooms for members who have things they’d like to do. We are trying to get a lot of involvement in it. Most of the time we’ll have a quick meeting on stuff that’s going on, and then everybody has time to work on what they want to work on” co- leader Sarah Brumett said.

Art Club meets on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:00 and most of Art Club’s set up is free studio time, so students can come in and work as they please.

“I usually just do my own thing. I usually just have in my mind what I want to do, and then I do it. I don’t usually talk to anyone while I’m drawing,” art club member Kassi Jones said.

It’s really up to the individual student to decide how they want to spend the time.

“It depends on the student, some of them like to congregate with the big group and laugh and joke and show each other stuff, and then some of them like to go back and work in some of their own quiet studio space, so it’s a nice balance,” Engelbrecht said.

There are many activities coming up this year that club members are excited for.

“I think that art club has some really good plans this year. They’re going to be designing their own shirts with some spray paint. We have a lot planned. A field trip coming up in October to STL to the art museum,” Engelbrecht said.

They have even more things planned coming up fast.

“We are going to go to the Library and work with Kent Bagnell on this cool splatter painting on this Library Mural,” Engelbrecht said.

This upcoming event has everyone excited.

“We’re gonna paint the mural on the library, so I’m really excited for that,” Jones said.

As we get into the swing of things this year, art club welcomes any interested newcomers.

“I think everyone should join art club because it’s really fun and you can make some great friends, it’s just a great experience” Jones said.
