Students share quirky talents
Many people at Rolla High have quirky talents that not many people know about.
Sophomore Diya Allada has memorized over twenty Disney and Nickelodeon theme songs from your favorite childhood shows. Some of these include the theme songs of Danny Phantom, Cory in the House, and Zoey 101. This talent doesn’t just amaze her friends, it also helps her in school.
“I put the things I need to memorize into songs to remember key ideas for tests and quizzes,” Allada says, “One time I was taking a biology test and I used the song DNA by Little Mix to remember our unit on DNA”.
Sophomore Kat Conaway, has been musically inclined since kindergarten. Alongside singing, Conaway has furthered her interest in music by taking up a variety of musical instruments.
“I taught myself how to play all of [the instruments] because anytime somebody else would try to tell me what to do I would get really frustrated,” Conaway says.
Conaway taught herself how to play 9 musical instruments. A few of them are clarinet, kazoo, ukulele, baritone, accordion, and euphonium.
Sara Forrest, sophomore, is able to perform a Cirque Du Soleil inspired trick. Forrest was in an elite gymnastics class and has been doing flexibility tricks ever since.
“Cirque Du Soleil was definitely like my inspiration. I was obsessed with it. I loved trying to do the things they did. One night I was on youtube and I looked up their (Cirque Du Soleil) tricks and I kinda just whipped out my tie dye yoga mat and like taught myself how to do it,” Forrest said.
Forrest’s trick gets mixed reactions from her peers.
“Usually whenever I do a back bend into my legs over my shoulders…a lot of people react in different ways, some people are grossed out by it and other people ask how does your body do that,” Forrest said, “Like it’s cool to be able to do this trick because people will come up to me and ask me to show their friends.”
Sophomore Mason Harrison, perfected his juggling talent in his pastime and now is able to juggle fruit, juggling balls, and juggling pins. Juggling has become one of his leisure activities and he enjoys performing for his peers.
“Juggling has definitely made my boredom diminish. It gives me something to do in my free time and helps with focus. When juggling you really have to focus on switching your focus to each object when it leaves your hand in order to keep a fluid movement,” Harrison said.
At Rolla High School there are many talents that go unnoticed because they don’t fit into specific categories. These talents make each of these students unique in their own way.
